Dr. Warren saw Mom late this afternoon. Her vitals look great, and she tolerated the ng tube being clamped without getting nauseated. So, hang onto your hat...she gets broth for dinner!
We had teased Dad that he was going to have to take Mom to the all-you-can-eat ice chip buffet tonight for their anniversary dinner.
Too bad! :)
If she tolerates clear liquids, she will graduate to liquids, then soft foods and she may get to go home over the weekend.
Considering where she was on Monday, ain'ta that good news?!

Dr. Warren's Working Late Tonight
He just came to see Mom and we asked him about the jump in the CA125 count. He is actually not too discouraged at this point. The CA125 measures protein and chemo causes cells to die, releasing protein. He said taking this marker test seriously is premature and that a more accurate reading would be a month after her chemo treatment. It could acutally be a good sign that the count is up so much right now in that the Doxil may have killed a lot of cancer cells.
Dr. Warren also said Mom's belly feels softer now and has gone down quite a bit, so he wants to have the ng tube clamped for a while tonight. We'll see whether it makes Mom nauseated or not.
We'll keep you posted.

Daily Report
Mom found out today that her CA125 was 2541 on Monday when she came to the hospital. You may recall that it was 1360 on December 15 before she had chemo on the 18th. Her count was 2610 back in May when they first found the cancer, so this news is disappointing considering she had chemo recently.
X-rays from this morning showed no change in the ileus so they have not tried to clamp the ng tube today as they had planned.
Her vitals remain steady: BP is 120/62, O2 Sat is 95% and her temp is 37.1 C.
Mom has been up walking a few times today. She has a hard time holding her head up because the ng tube hurts, but other than that, she is tolerating the walks.
We have not seen Dr. Warren yet today, but Dr. Bell (Palliative Care) has been by to talk to Mom about a few things.
So, we are still in a holding pattern here. Things are pretty much the same today as they were yesterday.
Mom says, "Thanks for praying for her."

One Day At A Time
Sorry for the late post. Mom's doctors came to see her this evening and this is the first chance your blogger has had to be on the computer...
Mom really perked up yesterday after the ng tube was put in. She was finally able to get some rest and her vitals improved steadily thoughout the day.
She is not able to eat anything but ice chips at this time. The doctors are resting her bowel in hopes that it will help resolve the kink.
Mom is still running a fever off and on...tonight it was 100.2. Lab tests revealed she has a UTI and a chest x-ray shows the possible beginnings of pneumonia in her lower left lung. She is now on antibiotics to treat both problems.
Her oxygen saturation level is staying pretty consistent at 94-97 and her blood pressure is 120/64. Both look better today than yesterday.
Tomorrow, they are going to clamp the ng tube for a while to see how she tolerates the gastric fluids. If she does okay, they will work toward getting the ng tube out and getting her on a liquid diet. If she does not tolerate having the ng tube turned off, they will give it another day and try again on Thursday.
The reason for the ileus (kink) is not confirmed at this time. It could be that her colon just got a rotation in it, but it could be that there is a tumor in the way. If it is the latter, there is still a significant chance for complications in the days ahead.
Dr. Warren is evaluating the situation each day and doing everything he can to keep Mom comfortable. We are grateful for his vigilance.
We are also grateful for you, our dear family and friends who have joined us on this journey. God has been so good to us!

This Just In
Mom was admitted to the hospital (St. Luke's) this morning. The doctor ordered x-rays of her abdomen and found that she has an ileus (kink in her bowel). She is intubated and the decompression in her stomach may help work the kink out. She is so weak that surgery is not an option. If the ng tube doesn't work, she will be going to be with Jesus very soon.
Please pray with us that her suffering will be minimal. We know Jesus can take better care of her in Heaven than we can here and we are asking for His will to be done.

Slip Sliding Away
Mom was determined to make it through Christmas, but we have seen a rapid decline in her health this past week. She is not eating or drinking much, mostly because the fluid build-up in her abdomen makes her feel full already. Dad did take her to the hospital this morning where they confirmed she was dehydrated and her electrolytes are messed up, namely her sodium and potassium levels. She is also anemic and her iron count is off.
She was placed on an IV drip to get some fluids back in her and she will follow-up with Dr. Warren tomorrow. For now, they have sent her back home.
Please pray with us that the Lord's will be done.

The Best Christmas Present Ever
In the days before Christmas, Mom was feeling sad that she couldn't give us gifts this year. One night when she couldn't sleep, she thought of something she could give us, something she already had.
On Christmas, when all the other gifts had been exchanged, she brought gift bags to us with the Bibles she has used over the years. They are tattered, well read, marked up and falling apart. There wasn't a dry eye in the room as we realized the treasure we had each just been given. We listened to the song, "I Have A Goodly Heritage" and just cried for a while thanking God for all we do have.
I may not have riches as some others may
But I have a mother who knows how to pray
And maybe there's some things I've missed in my youth
But I have a father who stands for the truth
And if in the future, my parents pass on,
To dwell in that city we've come to call Home
They may not leave me the goods of this world
But I have accepted their God and His Word
I have a goodly heritage
I'm blessed with things you can't see
I have a goodly heritage
And that is worth far more to me
"...I have a goodly heritage." Psalm 16:6b

Well, No Wonder...
...Mom hasn't been feeling well. She got her CA125 test results today and she jumped from 215 to 1360 in her month without chemo.
Yikes! Going the wrong way in a big hurry!
It's a good thing she started chemo again today. She tolerated it well and she is really hoping to feel better in time to enjoy the holidays with us.
We're hoping, too.

More Chemo
Mom saw Dr. Warren in Cedar Rapids today. She is going to start chemo again and will have her first treatment this Thursday at 1:00 PM. Dr. Warren said if the Doxil is going to work, she will begin to see relief right away...in time to enjoy the upcoming holidays.
We will continue to keep you posted on her progress.
Blessings!

More About Mom
Thank you for joining us in prayer about Mom getting an appointment with Mayo Oncology. God answered this prayer and Mom was seen this afternoon around 1:15.
Unfortunately, she is not a candidate for any of the clinical trials at Mayo right now; however, the doctor did prescribe strong pain killers and discussed the benefits of continuing chemo in Cedar Rapids. The continued chemo will not provide healing, but should help ease the pain and fluid build-up. Mom will likely pursue the additional chemo, but she is still deciding on this quality of life matter.
Mom is taking the news pretty well, but if you would like to send her a note or a card, we know she would appreciate hearing from you. Her address is:
760 Grand Ave
Marion, IA 52302
If you would rather call her, send an email to kim@reemconsulting.com and Kim will give you her number.
Blessings!

We Need A Miracle
We were hoping for better news...
Dr. Cliby said he gave Mom the best surgery possible and the best chemo possible and that at this time, there just isn't much more he can do for her. He is sorry it didn't work out. He feels that additional chemo would be a long shot with a 1 in 8-10 chance for improvement.
The one possibility that exists is her participation in a clinical trial and she made an appointment with Oncology to find out more details. They could not get her in until December 24; however, there is a blizzard forecast this Tuesday and Wednesday, so Mom and Dad are going to stay put in Rochester and be available for several days hoping to take an appointment someone cancels due to the weather.
Please pray specifically that an appointment becomes available and that the trial would be one that Mom can participate in.
Mom is having more and more trouble with the ascites (fluid in her abdomen). Her abdomen is distended which makes her uncomfortable and diminishes her appetite.
In this season of miracles, please continue to pray with us for the miracle of Mom's healing. Of course, the greatest miracle of all is that Jesus Christ came to this earth to die on the cross for our sins, and by faith we can accept Him.
On a day like this when the news is not what we wanted to hear, we still rejoice because we know that Mom has accepted Jesus as her Saviour. While our time left together on earth may be short, we know we get to spend eternity with her.
That's priceless.

Resistance is Futile
Mom had several tests early this week, then she saw Dr. Warren on Thursday. It appears she has developed resistance to her chemo drugs and has hit a major plateau. Her CA125 dropped only 7 this time and her CT scan indicates there is still abdominal fluid present.
Dr. Warren suspects Dr. Cliby will want to continue chemo trying different drugs. Mom will be at Mayo on December 7, so we will know more very soon.
In this season of Thanksgiving, we will celebrate the blessing of still having our Mom with us. It has not been an easy year, but there have been many blessings in our valley and we have seen God's faithful hand at work in our lives.
We will also celebrate the blessing of loving family and friends who have encouraged us and lifted us up in prayer. How we thank God who has, for now, blessed us with these.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Round 6, No Bells
At Mom's chemo lab, they have a bell for patients to ring when they finish chemo. She was expecting to ring the bell yesterday, but her chemo went so late there was hardly anyone there when she finished up, so...she didn't bother to ring the bell in celebration.
Bummer!
Mom is going back on November 17 for a new CT scan and lab work, then she will see Dr. Warren on the 19th. Next, she will see Dr. Cliby at Mayo on December 7 to discuss a maintenance plan.
Mom's CA125 dropped to 222, 25 less than the last time and we are thankful it is still dropping, even if progress seems slow. Maintenance chemo may help it continue to drop, but Mom wants to know what all of her options are before she decides.
She has had some neuropathy in her hands the past few weeks, but Dr. Warren suggested that she eat more vegetables and it seems to be doing better.
She is getting another white blood cell shot today and it will make her achy for the next few days. The last chemo and this one have also made her more tired.
Mom really looks good for all she has been through, but she still has so much progress to make. She covets your continued prayers as this cancer is not ever going to go away. It recurs and is basically a chronic condition that will always be with her unless God intervenes.
Pastor Morrow reminded us on Mother's Day about the importance of the word "my." Mother is a familiar word and we all have (or had) one. We understand that mothers everywhere suffer every day and we all care in a general sense; however, knowing that "my" mother is suffering naturally intensifies our level of concern.
Obviously our Mom is not your mother, but we want you to know that your prayers, care and concern mean so much to us because she is ours.
Blessings!

News From Round 5
Mom says, "Hi and thanks so much for your prayers."
Her chemo went well again yesterday. Her doctor and nurses are pleased with how well she is doing. She looks good, is eating well and has some energy, though she tires easily. We offer help almost daily, but she is satisfied doing for herself. We're glad she can.
Her CA 125 dropped to 247, down from 295 and her recent CT scan indicates there is still cancer present, but smaller amounts.
She will have chemo again in the 28th, then we will wait three more weeks and she will have another set of marker tests. After those are done, she will go back to Mayo to meet with her surgeon to discuss whether she should have maintenance chemo.
If you are interested in offering a word of encouragement, Mom's address is 760 Grand Ave, Marion, IA 52302.

Round 4, Slow & Steady
Sorry to be running behind with this update.
Mom had several tests last Tuesday, including a CT scan. Her doctor can tell there is less cancer, but it is difficult to know for sure how much of her progress is due to her surgery and how much is due to the chemo because the CT he used for comparison was done prior to her surgery. There is still a small amount of fluid present as well.
Her CA125 level has again dropped, this time from 399 to 295.
Her chemo session went well and so far, she is not having any major side-effects from it, for which we are thankful.
Her next chemo date is Thursday, October 8.

Round 3...Cancer on the Run
Mom is finishing up her 3rd round of chemo this afternoon and just received the results of her CA125 test today. It has dropped from 791 to 399. Significant progress in the right direction!
So far, the side-effects of the chemo have been typical, but she had quite a bit of nausea with the last treatment and we're praying it goes better this time.
Her 4th chemo is scheduled for Thursday, September 17. This is the midway point so she will go in on the 15th for a CT scan and some additional lab work to help track her progress.
We remain grateful for your continued prayers.

Round 2 (Ding, Ding, Ding)
Mom had her second chemo treatment yesterday and it went pretty well. Her labs looked good and her CA 125 level has dropped to 791...nearly half of what it was three weeks ago. Still, a long way to go to get to =<35.

Remember the old saying, "When it rains, it pours?" Well, we're having a time of it...
Ronda has been in excruciating pain since last Thursday and an MRI revealed she has a ruptured lumbar disc which is causing considerable problems for her sciatic nerve. So, she will be in surgery sometime yet today...we don't know exactly what time.
Please keep her in your prayers throughout the day today. She needs relief we can't spell with R-O-L-A-I-D-S!

Mayo Update
Mom's appointment at Mayo went pretty well on Friday.
Her pre-surgery CA125 level was in the 2600's. Her recent labs indicate the level is now in the 1500's. The ideal number is 35 or less, so she has a long way to go.
She still has quite a bit of swelling in her abdomen from the surgery, but Dr. Cliby seemed pleased with her progress. Healing takes time.
Please continue to lift Mom up in prayer this week...she starts chemo Thursday morning at 10:00 AM.

Mom made it out of the house yesterday...she went to church with Dad on Father's Day. It tired her out, but it was good for her to leave the house for a little while.

Sisters, Sisters
Linda and Pat came from Illinois to visit Mom today. They brought some beautiful flowers (from Marilyn, too) and talked Mom into playing Upwords with them. Apparently Mom's medications haven't messed with her mind too much, because she beat them the first game. Of course, they could've been taking it easy on her...
Chef Linda and Chef Pat have whipped up Mostaccoli and garlic bread for dinner, and strawberries & cream trifle for dessert. Wonder what it would take to get them to hang around a while longer?
I'm no Alton Brown, but thems good eats!

Day by Day
The weekend found Mom in a bit of discomfort, but she is doing better today. She was able to get outside for a short walk and it was a perfect day to be out.
She was caught folding laundry and had to be scolded. She just can't stand doing "nothing."
We have to keep trained eyes on her at all times! :)

Recovery & Chemo
Mom is to take it easy for the next few weeks. She's not quite sure how she will handle letting someone else do her housework, laundry, grocery shopping and cooking. Grandson Andy told her today to keep an open mind...she might find out she likes doing nothing! We'll have to monitor this closely!
She will start chemo the end of June or the first part of July, and will have chemo every three weeks for 18 weeks.
She is also scheduled for a 6-week post-op visit the middle of July.
Things have gone extremely well so far and we give God the praise and credit for Mom's healing. We know there are more hurdles ahead, and we humbly ask for your continued prayers.

Things have gone extremely well so far and we give God the praise and credit for Mom's healing. We know there are more hurdles ahead, and we humbly ask for your continued prayers.
Home...Sweet, Sweet Home
Mom was able to leave Mayo Clinic today. It took a while to get all the discharge tasks completed, but she was on the road by 12:45. She had a short van ride to the Rochester Airport where our friend Perry was waiting to fly Mom home. Her flight lasted about an hour and she landed safely at 2:11.
Mom is a bit tired from her big day, but she says, "It feels so good to be home!"

A Note From Mom
"Even In The Valley, God Is Good" - That is a song my daughter Bethany has been singing as she tours with the OBC Melodies this summer. How true it is! God has certainly been good to our family as we've been in the valley the past few weeks. Praise Him for His goodness.
The outpouring of love and concern from family and friends (some of whom we've not heard from in years) has been overwhelming. You never know how much people care until a time like this. Thanks to each one for the many acts of kindness shown to us and most of all for the prayers. They are a big help as we journey through this valley. Keep praying! We have passed one hurdle, but there are more to come!

Steady She Goes
Mom began eating liquids yesterday and tolerated them well, so today she is transitioning to soft foods...so far so good.
Her progress the past couple of days has been remarkable. She has been removed from her pain medication drip and IV. Her pain is under control now with oral medication and she has cleared most of the major hurdles necessary for her discharge...possibly tomorrow.
Very good news indeed!

Mission Accomplished
Mom just finished her last walk for today. She was up and walking eight times! Way to go, Mom!
Mm, Mm, Good!
It is evident that many are praying for our Mom. She is doing quite well in spite of the extent of her surgery. She was able to get up and take a shower today, and is now on a clear liquid diet. Mom was excited to finally get to eat. Her color is excellent, and she is talking a lot more. Her new goal for today is to take eight walks. Dr. Reynolds (Dr. Cliby's assistant) told Mom that they would be coming in later today to discuss chemotherapy treatment with her. We are encouraged by all the thoughtful comments that are being left and also by all the many prayers being prayed on our Mom's behalf.

Little By Little
Well, Mom got off to a good start today. She was able to have her catheter removed, and was up and walking three times before noon. It looks like she will make her goal of six walks today! She was also taken off of one of her antibiotics, which was making her feel sick.
Mom had a great visit with her sisters! They were only here briefly, but they really boosted her spirits.

One Lap Down, One To Go!
Mom has had a rough time getting up and around today. She has been in a lot of pain. At about 2:30, the nurse came to take her for a walk. She was able to make it all the way around the nurses' station one time! She is worn out from that, and is resting now.
Mom's sisters, Marilyn and Pat arrived this afternoon. It is so nice to have them here to spend some time with Mom.

Steady Progress
Dr. Cliby's assistant came in first thing this morning and removed the tube from Mom's nose. She was so glad to have that out! Now she is able to take some of her pain meds in a pill form. Dr. Cliby came in a little later, and said things were looking very good. He did notice that Mom was a bit anemic, and said they may give her a unit of blood to help with that. Dr. Cliby then challenged Mom to walk twice around the nurses' station today. She will attempt that later, after some of her grogginess has worn off.

Sisters, Sisters, There Were Never Such Devoted Sisters

Sisters make such great friends. Mom has three sisters and two of them are coming to spend the weekend with her.
Please pray for their safety as they travel from Missouri and Illinois tomorrow.
On The Move!
We have been trying to get Mom moved into a private room. We were told that if one became available, Mom would be moved. As I was sitting with her this evening, the nurse came in with good news. She said that a private room had opened up, but that there was a catch. She told Mom that she would have to walk all the way to her new room. Mom was skeptical, but said she'd try. She made it all the way! The nurses (one of whom was following closely behind with a wheelchair) were amazed! Mom is now settled in her new room, but the trip there has left her pretty worn out.

Just Keep Walking
Mom's second walk went better...she made it out of her room into the hall. Go Mom!
Baby Steps
A word from Sarah......My sister, Melissa and I just got back from visiting with Mom in her room. While we were there, the nurse came in to take her for a walk. This was Mom's second attempt, and after trying earlier this morning, she was dreading it. This time, however, she was able to take several small steps before returning to bed. She is now exhausted, and is resting. Thank you all for your continued prayers.
Slow Goin'
The nurses tried to get Mom up this morning to walk, but she about passed out. She is still very groggy from the anesthesia and nauseated. They are going to try to get her up again soon.

Doctor's Report
Dr. Cliby and his assistant came to see Mom this morning. They discussed the surgery with her and answered her questions. It turns out she won't be able to wear her bikini any more!
They checked her incision and said everything looks good. They want her up and walking six times today...YIKES!

Just Kiss It & Make It Better
Mom made it through a long, pain-filled night. Steph & Bethany stayed with her and she came out of her grogginess enough to ask lots of questions. You'd be proud of Steph...she told Mom what she could AND made it without crying. (We're very proud!)
During the night, Mom said, "Owie!" Bethany asked if she needed a Band-aid and Mom said, "Just kiss it and make it better." How we all wish we could!

The Skinny
Dr. Cliby just came to meet with us...nice man.
He did a complete hysterectomy and bowel resection and removed cancer cells from Mom's diaphragm, colon, rectum and other tissues. He also removed eight lymph nodes. Her lung was deflated while they worked to repair a patch of her diaphragm and has now been reinflated. Dr. Cliby said this looks good right now, but it is something they will need to watch closely as fluid can accumulate and/or the lung could collapse. The other area of significant concern right now is the colon/bowel resection. Both areas can cause complications for Mom in the next few days.
There were many cancer cells throughout Mom's abdomen and the surgical team did their best to get everything they could. However, the were some cancer cells on her small intestine that they were unable to remove. Each cell that was left behind is smaller in size than 1/3 inch, which allowed the surgical team to achieve optimal results with this surgery. They are hoping Mom will respond to chemo and the remaining cells can be eradicated then.
We continue to covet your prayers! Blessings!

In Recovery
Mom is now in recovery. She will be there until around 6:00 PM, then she will be taken to her room.
Dr. Cliby is on his way to talk with us. More soon.

Home Stretch
We just received word that Mom has had a complete hysterectomy and a bowel resection. They are wrapping things up, but she will still be in surgery for a couple of hours.
Going In!
We were just given an update that Dr. Cliby did find the cancer as expected. He is continuing the operation, which will include removal of several female organs as well as any other areas he finds cancer in. So, the big incision has been made and he is going in.
It is expected Mom will be in surgery another 4 hours.
We are so thankful for this answer to prayer.

So we wait and pray.
And find some lunch!
And She's Off...
Mom just got moved to the pre-op room. She's ready when they are.
Peace
Nine years ago while delivering Kylie, her vitals deteriorated so quickly that I was rushed to emergency surgery. I became separated from Jim in the flurry of activity and Kylie was taken from me to NICU once she had been delivered. As I lay in recovery, I did not know Kylie's status. I had so many questions, but I also had a tremendous peace I couldn't explain with words. I felt God's presence and it comforted me to know that I wasn't alone.
I see that same peace in Mom today, and I know she isn't headed into surgery by herself. The Great Physician is going with her and he promised, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee."
Mom is in good hands today...God's hands. And there is peace in knowing he is near.

O Dark Hundred
Mom is to report at 7:00 AM to begin prep for surgery. We don't know yet when she will have surgery...it depends on when the patient ahead of her gets out of the OR.
Mom shared Exodus 33:14 with us this morning..."My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest." All eight kids made it here at different times during the late night and early morning...and Mom joked she will be the one getting rest today.

Green Means Go
Mom's labs are fine, so she has a green light for surgery tomorrow morning in the Methodist Building at Mayo.
Please pray for Mom, her surgeon Dr. William Cliby and his team, and for those who are traveling to be with her during this time.
Blessings!

Waiting
Mom saw Dr. William Cliby @ Mayo this morning. She is having lab work done today and, depending on her albumin level, one of two scenarios will occur. She will either have surgery tomorrow morning, or she will come back home for a couple of months of chemo, and have surgery at a later date. We will know more this afternoon when the lab results come back.
For now, she's off to a pre-op and registration with admissions.

Mom has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and will visit Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota tomorrow to get a second opinion and schedule surgery. I will post the details here once we know more.
Mom recently encouraged our family with Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths." God picked this path for Mom and she wants all of us to trust him with the outcome.
We covet your prayers. God bless!
